7 essential Tips For Articles That Hold Your readers Attention

In 1895, John Deere started publishing a magazine for farmers called The Furrow.

The company published the magazine in hopes of being a resource for their customers. 

The content featured in The Furrow was educational, and it focused on teaching farmers how to be more fruitful business owners — a quintessential example of content marketing. via Is John Deere The Original Content Marketer?

This is one of the first examples of content marketing.

John Deere engaged with his customers. He informed them and educated them about all things farming and business. Do you think that farmers reading and learning from his newsletters  appreciated it?

For me the answer is a resounding yes. Why?

The Furrow is still published today.  The Furrow has modernised using social media channels LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.

1 Be Relevant.

If the content is relevant to the reader you will peak their interest and thus engage them. 

But how do we make our content relevant?

2. Be unique.

This is your opinion.  You comment on an article adding information that has meaning for your target market.

3. Be Appropriate.

You only want to post content that is appropriate to your target market. Content that isn’t relevant will be ingored and could devalue your previous efforts.

4. Give Value.

When you give a person something of value they will appreciate it. The principle of reciprosity also kicks in. This is when they want to give back to you. People who have benefited from high value content are most likely to share it with their peers. 

5. Give Quality

“Quality content” is far more than just a buzzword marketers throw around for fun.

It’s what savvy marketers strive for, and what Google and people look for. I think the message here is clear. Do not publish rubbish because your readers are not silly. They value their time and should should we.

6. Be consistent

Writing quality educational and informative content is time consuming. But if you if you don’t regularly publish, how can you establish a readership that keeps coming back? You can’t.

But that isn’t the only reason. Google and the other search engines look at your website and rate it on freshness. That means they are looking for active sites because it means that the content is fresh.

At least one 1200 word post a month with several smaller posts each week is enough. And that means quite a significant investment of time.

One niche per blog – One topic per post

Simplicity is critical and so often ignored. Many business owner’s cram as much of their story as possible in the one article or video for that matter. 

This confuses the reader. Even if the the reader finds sections of the article valuable, they are not likely to remember them. They will become distracted.

Keep your readers focused. Address one topic, one aspect of interest to your reader in the article.

The headline or snippet promoting the post grabbed their attention. So why start add other topics. Stick with the topic that appealed to them in the first place. If you do then you have a chance they will return, click the share button or even connect with you.

They have already told you what is of interest to them so, when you’re on a good thing – stick to it. 

But we recommend that you take this single topic per article idea one step further.

Have one idea per paragraph and one thought per sentence. Keep it simple and it is easy to read. 

Summary

Educating and providing customers with valuable, educational information has been proven to work. John Deere pioneered the concept way back in 1895. It worked!

Today the Internet has made content marketing cost-effective and incredibly powerful.

For it to work for you, the following tips are vital.

Be relevant. Only write about subjects that are of interest to your target market.

Be unique. Communicate your opinion and include content that will educate your customers.

Be appropriate. What is the point of writing about plumbing if your target market is a graphic designer?

Give value. If you provide value, your readers are far more likely to share your content.

Give quality. Providing quality content speaks for itself. Poorly written articles with little or no meaning for your target market is a waste of their time and yours.

Be consistent. Publishing an article every so often does not work. Google want to see content posted on a regular basis. Fresh, current content is what they want you to provide.

Finally, don’t confuse your readers. Keep each article limited to a single topic. One idea per paragraph and one thought per sentence. Oh yes, and make sure you keep it simple and easy to read.
